Why India Must Prioritize Its Demographic Dividend Over Caste Census to Achieve Viksit Bharat @2047
India is standing at a decisive crossroads. As the nation aspires to become a Viksit Bharat by 2047, the 100th year of Independence, the choices made today will determine whether this vision becomes reality or remains a slogan. At the heart of this transformation lies India’s greatest strategic advantage—its demographic dividend.
With over 65% of the population below the age of 35, India has the world’s largest youth population. This youthful energy, if empowered through education, skills, entrepreneurship, and opportunity, can propel India into the league of developed nations. The critical question before policymakers is clear: should the national focus remain on forward-looking development, or be diverted toward divisive exercises like caste census and population headcounts that offer limited long-term economic value?
Demographic Dividend: India’s Once-in-a-Century Opportunity
A demographic dividend is not automatic. It delivers results only when youth are healthy, skilled, employed, and productively engaged. Countries that successfully leveraged their demographic dividend—such as South Korea and China—did so by investing heavily in human capital, manufacturing, technology, and entrepreneurship, not by deepening social fragmentation.
India’s youth need:
- Quality education and future-ready skills
- Job creation through MSMEs and startups
- Entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems
- Digital inclusion and financial access
- Leadership and nation-building platforms
Focusing national energy on these areas directly contributes to economic growth, social stability, and global competitiveness.
The Risk of Diverting Focus to Caste Census Politics
While social justice and inclusion are essential, repeatedly emphasizing caste census and population-based enumeration risks shifting the national discourse from capability-building to identity politics. Such approaches may deepen divisions rather than unite the country around shared aspirations.
Development should be about empowerment, not entitlements alone; about opportunity, not categorization. A developed India cannot be built by counting differences—it must be built by creating value.
Youth-Centric Governance Is Key to Viksit Bharat @2047
The vision of Viksit Bharat demands a youth-first governance approach. Policies must aim to convert India’s young population into:
- Skilled professionals
- Job creators, not job seekers
- Global innovators and entrepreneurs
- Responsible citizens and ethical leaders
Programs focused on skilling, startup promotion, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, green energy, and rural entrepreneurship have far greater long-term impact than exercises that look backward instead of forward.
From Welfare to Wealth Creation
India must now transition from a welfare-dominated mindset to a wealth-creation-driven economy, where youth are enabled to participate meaningfully in nation-building. True inclusion comes when young people from all backgrounds have access to skills, capital, markets, and platforms—not merely classifications.
A strong economy naturally strengthens social harmony.
Youth Economic Forum’s Perspective
At the Youth Economic Forum, we strongly believe that India’s youth are the solution, not the subject of political debates. The focus must remain on enabling youth through leadership programs, entrepreneurship platforms, policy awareness, and global exposure.
Viksit Bharat @2047 will not be achieved by dividing India into numbers and categories—but by uniting youth around opportunity, aspiration, and national purpose.
Conclusion: Development Over Division
India has a narrow but powerful window to harness its demographic dividend. This opportunity will not last forever. If India invests wisely in its youth today, it can emerge as a global economic and moral leader by 2047.
- The choice is clear:
- Focus on demographic strength, not demographic division.
- Build skills, not silos.
- Empower youth, and India will rise.
